Is it "self-hosted" with a dash or "self hosted" without a dash?
Either is fine and both are correct.
This site's primary address does not use the dash just to keep things simple, but may use it in content in the site.
But we're not the boss of your dashes... you do you.

What does it mean to be self hosted?
Self hosting is a way of running your own website, blog, or application by setting up a server, service and/or network yourself.
Without the geek-speak, it means that you have control over your site design and content. If you aren't self hosted, your host decides what you can (and can't) do on your site, including color and text, links to other sites, social media connections and even advertising and monetization.
Even though it is often thought to require more technical skills, self hosting provides much more design flexibility and personalization and provides additional protection for your content.
It's easier than you think.

Can I host my own website?
Well of course you can!
With self hosting, you create your own website, and you purchase space through a hosting company to serve up your site and make it available to the public. You own your content and can do pretty much anything you want (as long as it's legal!).
Some people even take self hosting to the extreme and build their own servers or pay for Virtual Private Servers and run their own operating system, email, SPAM filtering etc. That's a whole different level of geekiness (but one we will address)!

Should I pay for blog hosting?

Can I host a blog for free?
"the best things in life are free" does not apply to blog hosting.
This falls under the category of "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should".

Is it even worth starting a blog these days?

Congratulations!

If you made it here to self-hosted success, chances are pretty good you're thinking about starting a blog.

If you haven't decided yet, decide right now! Everyone should have a blog (we'll go into that in a little while).

If you're like most people, the thought of starting a blog seems a little overwhelming and a whole lot more technical than you think you might be ready for.

Well, I'm here to show you how easy it is to start and maintain your very own successful blog. And you don't need to spend a ton of money to do it!
